Screen Protectors: Tempered Glass or Hydrogel — How to Decide
KifTechShare
Screen protectors don't get enough credit. A good one costs R50–R200. A screen repair on a recent flagship costs R800–R2,500. The maths is obvious. The only real question is which type to buy for your specific phone.
Tempered glass vs. hydrogel — which one?
For most phones with flat displays: tempered glass, no contest. It's rigid, scratch-resistant (9H hardness — harder than most keys or knives), and absorbs impact better than film. It feels identical to the bare screen under your finger. Apply it once, forget about it.
Hydrogel film is the right answer for curved-edge phones — Samsung Galaxy S series with curved sides, for example. A rigid glass sheet won't sit flush against a curved edge and will lift over time. Hydrogel is flexible, conforms to the curve, and self-heals minor surface scratches over 24–48 hours. The compromise is less impact protection than glass.
If your phone has a flat display: glass. Curved display: hydrogel or full-glue glass made specifically for your model.
In-screen fingerprint sensor? Check this first.
If your phone has an optical or ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint sensor (Galaxy S22 and up, OPPO Find series, some Xiaomi flagships), you need a protector specifically listed as fingerprint-compatible. A standard glass will block the sensor. This is clearly noted in the product listing — don't buy without checking.
Privacy protectors — who actually needs one
Privacy protectors use a micro-louver filter that blacks out the screen at viewing angles beyond about 30 degrees. Useful if you work with sensitive information in public — on trains, in coffee shops, in open offices. They do reduce screen brightness slightly at straight-on viewing angles, so expect a dimmer display in exchange for the privacy. Worth it if the use case fits.
The right way to apply one
Most failed applications come down to dust trapped under the glass. Apply yours immediately after running a hot shower in the bathroom — the steam settles airborne dust particles. Clean the screen with the included microfibre cloth, use the dust sticker to lift any remaining particles, align carefully from the top edge, then press from the centre outward.
If there's an application frame in the box, use it. It takes the alignment guesswork out completely and is worth the extra 30 seconds.
One thing people forget to check
Make sure you're buying for your exact model, not just the commercial name. Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ have different screen dimensions. A protector that fits one won't fit the other. Your model number is in Settings → About Phone.
Will a screen protector affect touch sensitivity?
Not noticeably with quality tempered glass. Hydrogel film has the least effect of all. If you notice reduced sensitivity after applying, there's likely an air gap near an edge — press it down fully before assuming the protector is the issue.
Do protectors work with phone cases?
Most flat tempered glass options do. Full-coverage curved glass can sometimes lift at the edges when combined with a tight-fitting rugged case. Look for 'case-friendly' in the listing if you use both.
