How to Choose the Right Phone Case — A No-Nonsense Guide

KifTech

A phone case is one of those purchases most people get wrong at least once. Either it's too bulky, it blocks the charging port, or the clear one turns yellow after six weeks. Let's cut through it.

What type of case do you actually need?

The honest answer depends on one thing: how often do you drop your phone?

If you're careful with your phone and mostly want to protect it from scratches and the odd fumble, a slim clear TPU case is all you need. They're light, show off the phone, and do the job for everyday use. Spend R100–R200 and move on.

If you drop your phone regularly — and you know who you are — get a proper dual-layer rugged case. The combination of a hard polycarbonate shell over a soft TPU inner layer actually absorbs drop energy rather than just wrapping the phone. Military-grade (MIL-STD-810G) rated cases have been tested from 1.2m drops onto concrete. They add bulk, but you'll stop paying for screen repairs.

Wallet cases make sense if you want to carry fewer things. Look for at least two card slots, a firm magnetic or clip closure, and check whether it blocks wireless charging — some thick folio cases do. If wireless charging matters to you, confirm in the listing before you order.

MagSafe-compatible cases are for iPhone 12 and later. If you use MagSafe accessories (car mounts, chargers, wallets) it's worth buying a case with the magnet array built in. Third-party MagSafe-compatible cases work fine with MagSafe chargers, just at standard Qi speed rather than the full 15W.

Finding the right case for your model

Cases are model-specific. A case for the Galaxy A55 won't fit an A35 even though they look similar. Before you order, check your exact model number in Settings → About Phone. Search that on KifTech rather than the commercial name. It takes 10 seconds and saves a return.

Same goes for in-screen fingerprint sensors. If your phone has one (most Galaxy S series and some OPPO models do), you need a case that doesn't push on the display and interfere with the sensor. Rugged cases with raised bezels around the screen are fine; some extremely tight-fitting designs can cause issues.

The clear case yellowing problem

Cheap clear TPU turns yellow within a few months from UV exposure and oxidation. If you want to keep that look, either buy an anti-yellowing formulation (most listings that mention this are genuine) or just accept you'll replace it in six months. There's no clear case that stays perfectly clear forever, but quality ones last much longer.

Delivery

All KifTech cases are imported duty-paid — what you see at checkout is what you pay. R49 standard delivery; free over R750. Delivery takes 8–17 business days.

Can I return a case that doesn't fit my phone?

Yes — contact us within 30 days of delivery. Unused cases in original packaging can be returned. Always check the model compatibility before ordering to avoid the hassle.

Do cases from KifTech support wireless charging?

Most slim TPU and polycarbonate cases do. Thick rugged cases and cases with metal plates sometimes don't. This is noted in the product listing where relevant.
